RYPT Mindset Corner: Binge

How to succeed in your fitness goals

Improve your nutritional outlook

As a new addition to the RYPT online blogging, I have decided that I will be looking at one idea of psychology each week and reviewing how it can help with your fitness.

This week: Binge

An easy pitfall to make when it comes to nutrition is to binge. It seems to be a natural human phenomenon that’s leads to an almost addictive style behaviour.

Being able to enjoy things in moderation is generally the best way to ensure that you incorporate things you enjoy into a healthy lifestyle.

Binge behaviour generally occurs when we fail to balance what we truly enjoy eating into our plan. Suppressing what we like eating is not a productive long term habit.

This may not seem the most orthodox fitness advice but going “cold turkey” on your nutrition will realistically only last so long.

Recently, I’ve drastically cut down my sugar intake and it’s been easier than I expected but this due to a moderated approach. I do feel slightly better for it (mainly through sleep and energy) but it will take time to see a difference.

Oftentimes, binge habits comes from routine. This is especially the case with food and drink at weekends. It’s easy to say yes to plans or have a routine where you don’t question what you consume. Sometimes it just takes a nutritional evaluation to see what you actually eat (and you may be surprised).

It’s often a case of not realising what you’re eating and this “blind” eating can seriously add up and impact your fitness goals.

I can’t recommend mindfulness highly enough. I’ve advised using the free Headspace app before and basic practices like this are guaranteed to help your focus and surprisingly, your all round outlook (even with nutrition). I would suggest try this or even looking into the practice of Mindfulness and experience how powerful it can be.
