Motivation Monday: Energy Boost
5 things better than coffee
New ideas for the office worker
How often do you feel fatigued whilst working the 9–5? Or worse, how many lulls in energy do you get, yet can’t sleep at night? This series is aimed at helping you.
Lesson 7: Energy Boost
Finding energy can be one of the most difficult things when it comes to a Monday routine. The excesses of the weekend, lack of sleep, feeling lethargic and dreading the week ahead all play a part.
So what can you do instead of reaching for another coffee? Well, there are a couple of things that can give you an instant energy release without worrying about the energy crash following.
Caffeine, plus creates an instant hit if energy and is not sustainable over the course of the day. I was recently watching the popular TV show QI and it was discussed that energy gained from caffeine is nullified by the cumulative effect of the body adapting to it. Essentially, caffeine does give you a boost but then you depend on it to bring you back to the same level as not consuming in the first place.
Yes, it is a welcome distraction to the working day and breaks up the routine but there are other things you can do to reach the same effect.
1) Fresh Air
Breaking up the day by getting some fresh air is a brilliant way to clear your head. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the office environment will help you to perform better at your daily tasks.
Overwhelm is one of the main reasons for stress, so taking a step back will certainly help improve your well-being.
As we all know, caffeine has the impact of dehydrating the body leaving us feeling thirsty. You can easily counteract this by ensuring that you drink enough water (roughly two litres per day) and ensuring that you have a bottle with you at work.
Taking a walk to the water fountain every now and again will incorporate the first point and also improve your hydration. What more can you ask for?
Protein is brilliant for improving concentration and making the body feel satiated.
Small, healthy, regular snacks will help improve your general this and make days like Monday much easier to get through.
Ensure that you pack your bag for work the night before and have a healthy dose of snacking options.
One of the worst things that you can do for your energy levels is to binge at major snack times. For example, having a five course lunch will only spike your blood sugar levels and lead to the peaks and troughs of hunger. This is particularly true when the majority of foods or sugar boost (even including fruit). The feeling of drowsiness after lunch is often a sign that the quantity is too high.
Remember, smaller and frequent snacks is the best way to boost energy.
Maybe a strange concept but how about relaxing more throughout the day?
This type of meditation can take the form of listening to music or even using the free Breathe app (for short guided meditation). It really makes switching the brain off more accessible. It’s difficult to understand until you free it but best of all it’s free! What can you lose?
Finding a quiet spot and taking a couple of minutes to reset is a great way to reduce stress and overwhelm. Alternatively, finding therapy from exercise is another avenue and RYPT can certainly assist with that…
